| Sox get to
Otsuka for comeback win
|
|
5/27/2007
By Rick Mauch / Special to MLB.com
ARLINGTON -- The Texas Rangers haven't been able to count on much this
season, but two things they could always rely on were relief pitchers Akinori
Otsuka and Eric Gagne.
Until Sunday.
When Dustin Pedroia homered off Gagne on Sunday in Boston's 6-5 victory
over the Rangers, it was more than the winning run.
It typified the frustration that has become the Rangers' season.
Gagne threw 11 pitches and had two strikes on Pedroia before giving up the
home run, the first of the season for an opponent against the Texas reliever.
He entered the game with a 0.00 ERA.
It also came on the heels of Otsuka surrendering two runs in the eighth to
give the lead back to the Red Sox. Otsuka had not allowed an earned run in his
previous seven outings, lowering his ERA to 1.02.
"I really felt good about our chances today," said Rangers
manager Ron Washington. "You wouldn't think Aki would give up two and
Gagne a bomb.
"They're only human. They've been flawless up to this point. There's
no reason to think this is going to be a trend."
Prior to Sunday, the Rangers were 14-0 when leading after the sixth inning,
a statement to the performances of Otsuka and Gagne. Texas led 4-3 after
seven, scoring all four runs in the sixth, highlighted by a three-run home run
by Mark Teixeira.Read

| McCarthy to miss next start for Texas |

#20 Brandon McCarthy
Ranger Baseball |
5/28/2007
OAKLAND -- Rangers right-hander Brandon McCarthy is expected to miss his
next start because of a blister on the middle finger of his right hand.
John Koronka is expected to make that start on Wednesday against the
Oakland Athletics. McCarthy had to shut down a bullpen session on Sunday
because the finger is still bothering him.
The Rangers called up Mike Wood on Monday from Triple-A Oklahoma. He'll
pitch on Tuesday, then be replaced by Koronka on Wednesday. The Rangers then
plan to activate Kevin Millwood on Thursday off the disabled list.
Millwood will start on Friday against the Seattle Mariners with Kameron Loe
being pushed back to Saturday.
The Rangers are not planning on putting McCarthy on the disabled list. They
are hoping he'll miss just one start and then return to the rotation on June 9
against the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Rangers, looking for starting pitching depth, have signed left-hander
Mark Redman to a Triple-A contract. He'll pitch for Oklahoma on Thursday.

Millwood sharp in Frisco rehab start
5/27/2007
By Peter Zellen / Special to MLB.com
Kevin Millwood allowed one hit over five scoreless innings in a rehab start as
Frisco edged visiting Tulsa, 2-1, on Sunday.
Millwood, recovering from a hamstring injury and likely to return to Texas
late next week, retired the first eight batters before giving up a double to
Rick Guarno in the third inning.
He retired seven of the next eight before coming out of the game. Millwood,
2-4 for the Rangers this season with a 6.62 ERA, struck out three and walked
one.
Luis Mendoza (5-0) got the win in relief, striking out six over four innings
-- including three in the ninth. Mendoza, who allowed two hits and a walk,
started for the RoughRiders (32-17) in his previous eight outings.
Jim Fasano's home run off Drillers reliever Darren Clarke to lead off the
eighth made the difference for Frisco. Jerry Hairston Jr. added a solo blast
with two out in the sixth.
Clarke (1-1) took the loss, yielding one run on three hits while fanning two.
Joe Gaetti's RBI single in the sixth accounted for the Drillers' scoring.
Ryan Mattheus took the hard-luck loss for Tulsa (26-24), giving up a run on
five hits and a walk with one strikeout over seven innings
