DALLAS -- The Dallas Stars' plans for an eighth Pacific Division title in the past 10 seasons took a hit courtesy of the St. Louis Blues.

Glen Metropolit and Doug Weight scored in a 17-second span in the second period to help the Blues stop the Stars' four-game winning streak with a 4-2 victory on Monday night.

Lee Stempniak scored two goals, including an empty-netter with 24 seconds left, and Curtis Sanford stopped 28 shots for the Blues, who won three of the four meetings this season.

Mike Ribeiro and Brenden Morrow scored for the Stars, who remain at 102 points, four behind the Pacific Division-leading Anaheim Ducks.

Dallas had gone 10-1-1 over its previous 12 games to put the pressure on Anaheim, but the Stars have only three games left to overtake the Ducks.

"We're still in the race heading into our final three games and our focus is to be playing as well as we can heading into the playoffs," Stars coach Dave Tippett said. "If we do that, the points will take care of themselves."

The Stars, who've clinched a playoff spot, could have captured the division title if they had won their final four games. By finishing with four straight victories, the Stars would have been no worse than tied with the Ducks and would have had more victories, the first tiebreaker. Now Dallas needs help.

"We didn't want this team to keep us from getting

home ice and winning the division," Morrow said. "It's definitely disappointing."

The Stars were on a roll with consecutive road wins over the weekend against Western Conference playoff teams Detroit and Nashville. But Dallas failed to maintain that momentum.

"We knew this would be a tough game coming off the emotional high against Nashville and Detroit," Morrow said. "But great teams find a way to win this one. It was a missed opportunity for sure."

With the game tied at 1, Metropolit put the Blues in front with his 14th goal from the right circle at 13:44 after a turnover by Stars defenseman Stephane Robidas. Weight's deflection for his 15th of the...more Stars

Stars assign Ellis and Lundqvist to AHL, recall Smith

December 15, 2006

DALLAS (AP) -- The Dallas Stars recalled goaltender Mike Smith from the AHL Iowa Stars on Friday and assigned center Joel Lundqvist and goaltender Dan Ellis to the minor league team.

Earlier Friday, the Stars had assigned Smith to the Iowa team in exchange for Ellis, but Ellis' flight to Los Angeles for the Stars'

game Saturday was canceled, the team said. Smith will be the backup goalie Saturday, he said.

Smith has a 5-3-0 record for Dallas this season, with a 2.27 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage.

Ellis has a 7-7-0 record for Iowa this season, with a 3.85 goals-against average and a .871 save percentage. He played his

only NHL game with Dallas in a 4-3 win against Los Angeles in February 2004.

Lundqvist, who appeared in his fifth NHL game Thursday night against the New York Rangers, has scored eight goals in 25 games for Iowa this season.

Lundqvist's twin, Henrik, is the Rangers goalie.

Modano joins Mullen as highest scoring U.S. players

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Dallas center Mike Modano tied Joe Mullen as the highest scoring American-born player with his 502nd career goal in the Stars' game against the Nashville Predators on Saturday night.

With the Stars on the power play, Modano skated down the left side and took a pass from defenseman Darryl Sydor at the blue line. Modano pulled up at the left faceoff dot and fired a wrist shot between the legs of Nashville goalie Tomas Vokoun.

Modano's total came in his 1,227th game. Mullen had his 502 goals in 1,062 games.

Modano, who has played his entire career with the Minnesota/Dallas franchise, has scored a goal in four consecutive games.

Stars sign former first-round pick Niskanen

FRISCO, TEXAS -- The Dallas Stars on Monday signed defenseman Matt Niskanen to a three-year contract at undisclosed financial terms.

Dallas' first-round selection in the 2005 draft, Niskanen recently finished a stellar career at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. His new contract begins next season and runs through the 2009-10 campaign.

The 195-pound Niskanen collected 10 goals and 35 assists in 77 career games at Minnesota-Duluth and also represented the United States in the 2006 World Junior Championships.
